For 18 years, Gavin Bailey has dedicated himself to coaching rugby, and he is now at Wierdapark Primary, shaping young athletes both on and off the field. As Head of Rugby, Gavin isn’t just teaching game tactics, he’s instilling values that last a lifetime.
“What inspired me to become a coach? Working with children and seeing them develop,” Gavin shares.
His passion for mentoring is clear in every training session and match, as he guides players to strive for excellence while learning the importance of respect and sportsmanship. For Gavin, greatness isn’t measured solely in points or trophies, it’s in the character his players develop.
“Respect is how I define greatness,” he explains. “I want every player to always do their best, regardless of the outcome.”
When times get tough, Gavin motivates his team by connecting them to the rich history of the school and reminding them of what they can achieve together. One of his proudest moments came in 2010, when his team won the league, a testament to dedication, teamwork, and preparation. Safety and preparation are a top priority in Gavin’s coaching philosophy. He has worked with MAX® Mouthguards for several years and speaks highly of the product and process.
“Using a professional, custom-fit mouthguard isn’t just about protection, it’s about developing the new generation of players safely,” he says.
Year after year, Gavin’s passion for coaching remains undiminished. “Work hard, play hard,” he encourages his players, echoing a simple yet powerful principle that guides both his coaching and his life.
His advice to young athletes? “Respect your opposition, they also have motivation.”
